Hemel Hempstead Canoe Club Hasler Marathon and Slalom Summer
On Sunday 13th September HHCC hosted it's annual Hasler canoe marathon on the Grand Union Canal. It includes short races for under 10's up to a 12 mile marathon for the elite. HHCC organiser Chris Carter said, "We had 120 entrants and it was a great days racing. From the faces, at the finishing line, you could see that everyone had enjoyed it."
Al Farrance, commented, "It was fantastic to see so many kids involved and having a good time. I would have done better in my race if I'd had an ICF, rather than my old ProBoat."
Meanwhile at slalom events this summer HHCC has been making its presence felt. James Prowse has been a regular and after completing his first race as a novice has gone on to win the 16 year old class at a recent event. "I got into canoeing at a course at HHCC this summer, and they've encouraged me on, it's been great. I've really enjoyed the competition, at the slalom and I even entered the Hasler marathon, which was fun too. My brother, Matthew, plays touch rugby and my Mum, Sue, likes little ponies, but this is so much better!"
Coach and team leader Robin Oakley got promoted to division 2 this season showing the investment in new current model boats was worth it.
James and Robin have additionally entered the slalom C2 class (a kneeling tandem propelled with a single ended paddle) and finally won their class at Nene. See picture.
