HHCC shares the Nash Mills Recreation Centre with other clubs, and we know about at least two other events running along side our race. We are arranging for extra parking, but please follow any directions and don’t block other people’s access – you wouldn’t want it to happen to you and we want to keep good relations with our neighbours and landlord!
13th September 2009
Another year, another race successfully run and as last year a big thank you to all who came and helped. As last year I receive thanks for "all my work as organiser" which leaves me feeling somewhat guilty as with people like Alan Corner and Bob and Yvonne Pearce around I don't have to worry about key functions like timing and results. The excellent team work these examples exemplify makes my life as organiser stress-free (in comparison organising slaloms was never relaxing).
With a good team the risk in doing the thanks is you forget someone, so I'm not going to try to list everyone who helped as it was a team effort. Instead I will focus on what went well.
On Saturday we did a belated spring clean and I haven't seen the club as clean for many years. Floors and walls were washed, carpets vacced, work surface disinfected, rubbish binned. Let's keep the club-house this way!
The results service was prompt, with provisional results up within about 15 minutes of the main class finishes and something I haven't seen at other races. In consequence I was able to bring prize-giving forward, another rarity.
And as last year, we kept everyone well fed with a good range of food.
Leighton Buzzard agains took the club trophy. It has been many years since we won it, so regaining it is our challenge for the future.
There was a small battle in the C2 doubles with Alan F and Robin challenging Tom Fryer and Gary. It was an ambitious challenge, espcially as Al and Robin were in a shorter slower Pro Boat, but they were only 4 minutes behind despite havin a swim. John H came second in division 8 and Sandy Hey and James Prowse completed their first division 9 race.
I'll stop waffling on, but over the winter there is the Essex series of races coming up, some Hare and Hounds at Leighton Buzzard, more regional Hasler races and hopefully the Ouse Race in November, so there is plenty of paddling to be done. See Races page for more dates and details.

BCU rules will apply. For convenience the following points are noted:
Upright number plates will be required for all ranking classes. They are preferred for other classes, where boats are numbered the number must be clearly visible from the left hand bank.
Is required for all competitors except juniors ranked in Divisions 7, 8 and 9 who are members of clubs with a registered junior section. Those unable to prove BCU membership on the day will have to pay an event fee (£2.50).
These are compulsory for all paddlers ranked in Division 7, 8 and 9. This applies across age categories and in singles and doubles. They are also required for the Lightning class. Team leaders should decide if other paddlers should wear them according to prevailing conditions.
All boats shall have sufficient buoyancy to support the weight of the paddler.
Promotions & Demotions
These may occur at the race as laid out in marathon rules 26 and 27.
The course uses the Grand Union Canal and has it’s fair share of Sunday walkers and anglers, while other clubs use the Nash Mills Recreation Centre. Please respect them when portaging and changing etc. as we want to have good relations with our neighbours and landlord.

We are arranging for extra parking, but please follow any directions and don’t block other people’s access – you wouldn’t want it to happen to you and we want to have good relations with our neighbours and landlord. Please be discreet when changing!
HHCC and helpers will endeavour to run a safe and enjoyable race, however we can not be held responsible for any loss of life, limb or equipment, or anything stupid that you may do.
