DETAILS FOR THIS YEAR (2012) ARE:
Apsley Lock Fun Day on 9th September (at Apsley Lock, next to Papermill Pub) 12 till 5 pm. Lots of other stuff happening too!
What should I wear and on feet?
Wetsuit boots or equivalent would be ideal, but trainers/pumps that you don't mind getting wet are more than suitable, but not great big ones if you want to go in small boats! Clothes wise, you should be wearing the equivalent of gym kit if you do not have any specific outdoor clothing. A waterproof jacket/top would be ideal if it is windy/cold. Jeans are not good - their cotton really soaks up water.
What type of boats will I be able to try out - canoes and kayaks?
We will have different types of craft available, including our new kayaks and canoes;
Do I need to be able to swim?
Everyone will be required to wear a Buoyancy Aid whilst on the Canal. The participant should feel confident in the water, whether or not they can swim. The participant may be limited to certain crafts, please discuss with one of the Coaches on-site prior to getting on the water;
Are changing facilities available?
Yes, the Clubhouse will be open to participants. However, in line with the Welfare Policy, as there are no separate changing facilities for under-18's and Adults, there will be restrictions on access at certain times;
Will there be anyone to help / guide / teach / supervise me?
Yes, there will be Qualified BCU Coaches, and Authorised Persons available to both guide and coach participants;
Do I need to reserve in advance a time-slot on the day?
There is no expectation for participants to book, however this may change depending on how the first 'Fun on the Canal Day' goes;
How can I recognize a committee member when I arrive / where should I report when I arrive?
Signage will indicate where participants should go. We're currently figuring out the best way to indicate who is a Coach/Authorised Person (watch this space);
Will there be a sign at the entrance to the recreation ground?
How long may I be there for?
This will be dependant on demand, and will be controlled by the Coaches/Authorised Persons, but as we have a selection of crafts available we would expect participants to swap where requested to enable others to try different crafts.
Will I need to sign a disclaimer beforehand?
Yes, all participants will be required to complete the Risk of Participation Disclaimer, any questions should be directed to the Coaches on the day.
